Sewai Upma – Delicious

Sewai is a versatile food item and a plethora of items can be prepared ranging from sweet to savoury. Savoury sewai can be cooked in a variety of ways and one such way is this easy one-pot recipe for sewai upma or pulao. This can quickly become a popular option for kids’ breakfast or their lunch boxes too.

Ingredients

  • Sewai - 2 cups
  • Finely chopped Onion - 1 medium
  • Peas - 1/2 cup
  • Chopped Garlic - a few cloves
  • Chopped Tomato - 1
  • Finely chopped green chilli - 1
  • Hing/Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Oil - 2-3 tablespoon
  • Chopped coriander leaves - 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tablespoon
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Water - 3-4 cups
  • Salt as per taste
  • Sambhar masala - 1/2 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Dry roast sewai until golden brown and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a deep pan.
  3. Add the mustard seeds and the hing until they splutter in the pan. Add the onion and saute until golden brown. Add the garlic and green chillies and cook for a few seconds. Finally add the tomatoes.
  4. When the tomatoes are pulpy, add the curry leaves and peas and cook for a few minutes.
  5. Add the turmeric powder. Add the sambhar masala and salt.
  6. Add 4 cups of water.
  7. Bring to a boil.
  8. Add the roasted sewai and mix properly. Cook covered until the water is absorbed by the sewai and it becomes tender.
  9. Remove from the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
  10. Let it cool for a while uncovered. Serve the Sewai Upma with curd or chutney.
