Chivda – Nasik Famous Snack is a yummy dry snack for all.

Chivda – Nasik Famous Snack is also called khamang chivda from Nasik, Maharashtra. This requires flattened rice (bhajke pohe), peanuts, cashew, raisins, fried onions, and some spices. This is a very quick and easy 10-minute recipe. It is a very flavourful and aromatic snack that tastes delicious. This is a perfect crunchy snack for your tea-time. So, try to make this yummy snack at home for this Diwali. All family members will enjoy this very much.

This is the original Nasik Chivda recipe from Buburao Kante from a small village ‘Dongargun’ in Maharashtra who started making this in the 1950s!!

This tasty snack was prepared by Mangla Munot – A lovely Grandmom with 50 plus years of cooking experience from Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • Use freshly ground masala to make the dish flavourful and aromatic.
  • You can use Pav Bhaji Masala or Maharashtrian Garam Masala instead of the freshly ground masala.
  • Better to use the Chivda Murmura/Bhajke Pohe but if you can’t find this then you can use normal poha/flattened rice.
  • You can add little sugar to it if you want.

Ingredients

  • Chivda murmura/Puffed Flattened rice/Bhajke pohe - 200 Gram
  • Peanuts - 1/2 Cup
  • Peeled peanuts - 1/2 Cup
  • Sliced Dry coconut - 2 Tablespoon
  • Cashew nuts - 2 Tablespoon
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Sliced Onion - 1/2 Cup
  • Raisins - 2 Tablespoon
  • Black peppercorns - 10 to 12
  • Laung/Cloves - 3 to 4
  • Saunf/Fennel seeds - 1 Teaspoon
  • Black stone flower/Rock flower/Dagad phool - a small piece
  • Turmeric powder - 1 Teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder - 1 Teaspoon
  • Citric acid/Nimbu ka phool/ - a pinch (optional)
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Oil - 2 to 3 Tablespoon + 2 Teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 to 2 tsp of oil in a pan. Fry the onion slices on a low flame for 10 minutes or until they turn brown.
  2. Fry the curry leaves too.
  3. Now, to a small pan, add a few drops of oil. Add black peppercorns, and cloves. Roast it on a low flame. Then add fennel seeds, and Dagad phool. Roast all the ingredients until they become aromatic. Keep aside to cool. Then grind to a fine powder.
  4. Now, heat 2 to 3 tablespoons of oil in a big kadai.
  5. Add peanuts and fry them on a low flame.
  6. Then add peeled peanuts, cashew nuts, and sliced dry coconut. Roast them until they turn pinkish. Turn off the gas.
  7. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and salt. Mix well.
  8. Then add bhajke pohe/poha murmura. Mix well all the ingredients.
  9. Turn on the gas and roast it on a low flame for one minute. Turn off the gas.
  10. Then add fried onion, curry leaves, and raisins. Mix well.
  11. Add a pinch of citric acid and mix well.
  12. Add the ground powder to it. Mix well.
  13. Yummy 'Chivda - Nasik Famous Snack' is ready to be served.
