Kachhe Kele ki Sabji | Raw Banana Sabji | Vazhakkai Poriyal is an old and traditional recipe.

Kachhe Kele ki Sabji | Raw Banana Sabji | Vazhakkai Poriyal is a very healthy and nutritious dish. This is a simple dry sauteed dish popular in South Indian cuisine. It is mildly spiced and goes very well as a side dish with sambar-rice, rasam-rice or with any South Indian meal of your choice. The tempering or tadka in this sabji also packs in a lot of flavors and not to forget the mild sweetness that comes from coconut. You can also have with chapatis or plain paratha.   • You can put raw bananas in salt water so that they do not turn black.
  • You can use a peeler to peel the bananas.
  • Do not overcook the bananas.
  • Adjust the spices and taste as per your preference.
  • Add oil in the boiling water of the raw bananas to avoid their stickiness.
  • You can add ginger to taste as per your preference.

Ingredients

  • Kaccha kela/ Raw banana (Plantain) - 2
  • Roasted bengal gram/Daaliya dal/Chutney dal - 1 small cup
  • Hari mirch/Green chili - 2 chopped
  • Rai/Mustard seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Jeera/Cumin seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Urad dal/Split black gram - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Lal mirch powder/Red chili powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Dry coconut- 1/2 small cup
  • Haldi powder/Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon + 1/4 teaspoon for boiling
  • Oil - 1 to 2 tablespoon + for boiling
  • Hing Powder/Aasafoetida - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Coriander leaves - to garnish
  • Water - as required
  • Lemon juice - of half lemon

Instructions

  1. Rinse the raw bananas first. Peel and dice them.
  2. Take a vessel full of enough water to immerse the pieces of bananas to it and add the diced raw bananas to it. Then add salt, a little oil and turmeric powder and boil them on high flame for 4 -5 minutes. After 4 minutes, prick the bananas with the help of a knife to check if they turn tender. Then, discard the water.
  3. Meanwhile put roasted bengal gram, dry coconut and red chili powder in a mixer grinder then do dry grind it. Set aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, curry patta, green chilli , hing, turmeric powder and let it splutter.
  5. Now, add boiled raw banana and saute them for 1 minute on slow to medium flame. Then add the ground dry mixture and cook for 2 minutes.
  6. After the sabji is well cooked, squeeze lemon juice of half lemon and garnish with coriander leaves.
