Plain Upma | Sooji Upma | Rava Upma is easy to make for kid’s tiffin for a busy morning. You just need sooji, and some spices to make this snack. This is a nice idea when you don’t have vegetables in your refrigerator and yet you want to serve something healthy and tasty. It is a light dinner option also. Ingredients

  • Clarified butter / Ghee - 1 tbsp + 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds / Rai - 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida / Hing - A pinch
  • Split bengal gram / Chana dal - 1 tsp
  • Split black gram / Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
  • Green chilli / Hari mirchi - 1 Slited
  • Curry leaves / Curry patta - A few
  • Semolina / Sooji - 1 Cup
  • Salt - As per taste
  • Sugar - 1/2 tsp
  • Water - 3 Cups
  • Lemon juice / Nimbu ka ras - Of 1/2 lemon
  • Coriander leaves / Hara dhnaiya - For garnishing
  • tsp = teaspoon
  • tbsp = tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tbsp of ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds, asafoetida, chana dal, urad dal, green chilli, curry leaves, and semolina. Mix well. Add salt and sugar. Mix well.
  2. Roast semolina for 2 to 3 minutes on medium flame till the nice aroma begins to rise. Stir it continuously.
  3. Then add water and mix well. Keep stirring continuously till the mixture leaves the pan and holds the shape.
  4. Add 1 tsp of ghee and mix well. Then turn off the flame and add lemon juice. Mix well.
  5. Once done, take it out to a serving plate and garnish it with coriander leaves.
  6. 'Plain Upma | Sooji Upma | Rava Upma' is ready to be served.
