Thandai | How To Make Thandai

Thandai the classic traditional Indian beverage. You just need dry fruits like almond, pistachios, poppy seeds, black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, saffron. This is a milk-based drink generally prepared on the occasion of Maha Shivratri and Holi. This is a popular drink in Northern part of India. You can enjoy this drink not only on festive occasions but in summer days to get relief from the heat. It is very simple and easy to prepare. You just need to soak and grind the ingredients. Then mix it with chilled milk, sugar. Moreover, it is a very healthy and refreshing drink. So, try to make it at home and enjoy with your family and friends.

This drink was prepared by Meeta Modi ji – a lovely grandmom from Mumbai.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • The ingredients should be soaked overnight for easy grinding.
  • The ground paste can be stored in a freezer for up to a month.
  • Only chilled milk should be used to get a better taste.
  • Strain the thandai using a muslin cloth to make it smooth and creamier.

Ingredients

  • FOR THANDAI MIXTURE:-
  • Badam/Almonds - 2 Tablespoon
  • Pista/Pistachios - 2 Tablespoon
  • Poppy seeds/Khuskhus - 1/2 Tablespoon
  • Saunf/Fennel seeds - 1 Tablespoon
  • Hari Elaichi/Green Cardamom - 1/2 Tablespoon
  • Black pepper corns - 1/2 Tablespoon
  • Jaifal/Nutmeg - 1/2
  • Kesar/Saffron - a few Strands
  • FOR THANDAI (for 1 serving) :-
  • Chilled milk - 1 glass
  • Thandai mixture - 1 Tablespoon
  • Powdered sugar - 1 & 1/2 Tablespoon
  • Ice cubes - as required

Instructions

  1. FOR PREPARING THE THANDAI MIXTURE:
  2. In a bowl, soak almonds, pistachios, black peppercorns, green cardamom, poppy seeds, fennel seeds, saffron, and nutmeg in 1/2 glass of water overnight.
  3. Grind all the soaked ingredients along with the water. Make a smooth paste. You can store this paste in the freezer.
  4. FOR PREPARING THANDAI:
  5. In a bowl, add and mix well-chilled milk, ice cubes, powdered sugar, and 1 Tbsp thandai mixture. Mix well. Then strain the thandai using a muslin cloth and transfer it to a serving glass.
  6. Delicious and refreshing 'Thandai' is ready to be served. Garnish it with rose petals and serve chilled.
