Upma or Karabath – Healthy Breakfast

Upma is a regular breakfast in most of South Indian households, made from rava/sooji. Here is the recipe. There are different ways of making this dish. Presenting here is the basic, tasty and healthy version of the same.

Ingredients

  • Onions -1 big or 2 medium sized (finely chopped)
  • Tomato - 1 big (finely chopped)
  • Peas - 1 cup
  • Red chilli - 2 cut into a slit
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds or rai - 1 teaspoon
  • Oil - 2 tablespoon
  • Karipatha or Curry leaves - 3 or 4
  • Chana dal - 2 teaspoon
  • Urad dal - 2 teaspoon
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon (finely chopped)
  • Water - 1.5 cup
  • Salt - 1 to 2 teaspoon as per taste.
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 teaspoon
  • Vangi bath or Pav bhaji Masala - 1 tablespoon
  • Rava - 2 cup
  • Green chilli - 2 cut into a slit

Instructions

  1. Take a pan and add 2 tablespoon oil. Let it heat and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, chana dal and urad dal. Let it fry for 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Add curry leaves and let it crackle for 1 minute .
  3. Add onions and saute for 5 minutes till color turns golden brown. Let it cook well.
  4. Add green and red chilli and ginger saute for 2 more minutes.
  5. Add tomato and peas and saute for 5 minutes. Let it cook well.
  6. Add 1.5 cup water and let it boil.
  7. Add turmeric powder, pav bhaji masala and salt. Let it boil well.
  8. Time to slowly add the Rava and keep stirring so that it doesn't catch at the bottom and get burnt. Mix well.
  9. Close the lid on low flame for about 2 minutes and let it cook well.
  10. Healthy and tasty upama or karabath ready to serve for breakfast.
