Chiyyali | Idli Chiyyali | Leftover Idli Upma is a delicious and healthy dish for all.

Chiyyali | Idli Chiyyali | Leftover Idli Upma is Andhra special recipe. The idlis are cooked with onion and seasoned with a special masala. This is spicy, tangy and little sweet it taste. This is a quick and easy meal you can have it as it is. It can be an evening snack or a light meal or travel food too. You can serve it as a high-tea snack or tiffin snack. This does not require anything. It is like an upma using Idli or Leftover Idli. So, try this easy to make dish for your family and enjoy.

This yummy dish was prepared By 78-Year-old Lovely Grandmom Vishala Hyagreev! She learned this dish from her Mom. It is 100 years old recipe.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • Add a teaspoon of ghee/clarified butter before serving to make it more delicious and aromatic.
  • You can store it for 2 days without any refrigeration.
  • Use leftover idli or fresh idli to make this dish.
  • You can carry this dish while travelling. Just cover it with aluminium foil to carry.

Ingredients

  • Leftover Idli - 1 Bowl chopped into small pieces
  • Onion - 1 chopped
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Heeng/Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Tamarind - 10 Gram
  • Jaggery - as per taste
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 Teaspoon
  • INGREDIENTS FOR MASALA:-
  • Chana Dal/Bengal Gram - 1 Tablespoon
  • Urad Dal/Black Gram without Skin - 1/2 Tablespoon
  • Coriander seeds - 1 Teaspoon
  • Dry red chillies - 3 to 4 or as per taste
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Asafoetida - 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Oil - 1/4 Teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Roast the chana dal, urad dal, dry red chilli, coriander leaves, with some oil. Then let is cool. Grind it to a fine powder. Add salt while grinding.
  2. Soak tamarind, jaggery in some water. The extract the juice of it. Add salt to the mix.
  3. Chop the idlis into small pieces.
  4. Heat oil in a kadai.
  5. Add asafoetida, mustard seeds and curry leaves.
  6. Then add chopped onion and saute it. Then cover it with a lid and cook for 5 minutes.
  7. Once the onion turns soft, above ground masala. (you can add the masala as per your taste).
  8. Then add chopped idli. Mix well and cook.
  9. Add tamarind juice. Mix well. Cook for a minute or two.
  10. Yummy 'Chiyyali | Idli Chiyyali | Leftover Idli Upma' is ready to be served.
