Dal Makhani is a very famous and lovable dish across India.

Dal Makhani is a combination of lentils cooked with some spices in onion-tomato based gravy. This is creamy, smooth and a lip-smacking dish. This goes well with rice either tandoori roti or naan. This is India’s most famous lentil curry or Dal and is the most ordered curry in restaurants when it comes to going out to dinner with family 🙂 I used one of my and prepared this restaurant style dish instantly after all as a mother, I have to listen to the wish of my son….Try this recipe for Sunday lunch or dinner and don’t forget to give me feedback…..

Ingredients

  • Whole Urad/Whole black gram - ½ Cup
  • Rajma/Kidney beans - ½ Cup
  • Whole Masur/Whole Red Lentils - ½ Cup
  • Onion - 3 Medium sized (2 for mixture and one for garnishing)
  • Tomato - 2 Medium sized
  • Garlic - 5 to 6 cloves
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Coriander Leaves - as required
  • Whole Green Chilli - 1
  • Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Bay leaves - 2
  • Asafoetida/hing - 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 Teaspoon
  • Cumin powder - 1 Teaspoon
  • Garam Masala/All Spice Mix - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 Tablespoon
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Butter - 4 to 5 cubes
  • Desi Ghee/Clarified butter - 2 Teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Wash the lentils with water and soak for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Grind onion, tomato, garlic, green chilli and ginger in grinder to make it paste
  3. Put the lentils, 3 -4 bowl water, salt, 5-6 ice cubes and bay leaves in a pressure cooker and boil it.
  4. Heat the pressure cooker at medium heat till 1-2 whistles comes and then takes 4-5 whistles on low flame. Put off gas and cool it.
  5. Open the lid of the pressure cooker.
  6. Put 2 tsp desi ghee in pan and add cumin seeds, asafoetida (hing) then add onion ginger chili paste and cook for 5 to 7 minutes on high flame. Now add spices as above.
  7. Add the boiled lentils and cook it till it is boiled at medium heat. If you want to more water then you can add it.
  8. Now garnish with onion rings coriander leaves and butter cubes.
  9. The tasty delicious dal makhani is ready to be served with chapati or parantha or nan or rice ..Enjoy!

    Masalas make or break a dish. You have put it as per your taste. It would be good if you let us know how much you used and then in brackets you could say as per taste.
    Also somebody new to cooking will find it difficult to judge the quantity of the masalas.

      Thanks Sita for the comment. But as you will see, we have given the quantity of all the ingredients except salt, garam masala etc. which in our opinion is subject to everyone taste. Some people like to eat less salt and some more, so thats why we have asked them to use them as per taste. Hope that answers your question.
