Moong Dal Chaat | Moradabadi Dal is a famous snack

Moong Dal Chaat | Moradabadi Dal is a healthy and protein rich dish. This dish is originally from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. It is a delicious and unique chaat. The main ingredient is moong dal. The spices like asafoetida powder, red chili powder, chaat masala, black salt, and roasted cumin seeds powder adds flavor to it. Topping the chaat with corinader-mint chutney, dates chutney and butter makes it more tasty. Adding the papdi or mathri and sev gives a nice crunch to the dish. Tips and suggestions by the Mom Chef :-

  • In place of meethi chutney you can put Tomato Sauce | Tomato Ketchup
  • You can use any mathri or papdi available with you.
  • Make this dish using the Khajoor Ki Chutney | Dates Chutney and Mint Coriander Chutney
  • The moong dal and water ratio should be 1:3.

Ingredients

  • Yellow moong dal/Yellow lentils - 1 cup
  • Water - 2&1/2 to 3 cups
  • Salt - to taste
  • Asafoetida powder/Hing powder - a pinch
  • Black salt/Kala namak - to taste
  • Roasted cumin seeds powder/Jeera powder - to taste
  • Red chili powder/Lal mirch powder - to taste
  • Chaat masala - to taste
  • Onion/Pyaz - 1 medium finely chopped
  • Tomato/Tamatar - 1 finely chopped
  • Coriander-Mint chutney/Green chutney - to taste
  • Meethi chutney - to taste
  • Ginger/Adrak - 1/2 inch finely chopped (optional)
  • Green chili/Hari mirch - 1 finely chopped (optional)
  • Coriander leaves - to garnish
  • Wheat papdi/Gehun ki papdi - to garnish
  • Namkeen sev/Zero sev - to garnish
  • Butter/Makhan - 1 teaspoon or as required
  • Lemon - 1/2

Instructions

  1. In a pressure cooker, put the washed moong dal and add the water. Put salt to taste and asafoetida powder.
  2. Cook for 2 to 3 whistles on high flame. Then switch off the flame and allow it to cool down.
  3. Take out the cooked dal in a bowl, sprinkle black salt, roasted cumin seeds powder, red chili powder, and chaat masala on it.
  4. Put the finely chopped onion and tomato. Add coriander-mint chutney, meethi chutney, finley chopped ginger and green chili.
  5. Then, garnish with coriander leaves, crush the papdi and add, namkeen sev, butter and lemon.
  6. The Moong Dal Chaat | Moradabadi Dal is ready to be served.
