Coconut Puran Poli is a popular and delicious dish from the state of Maharashtra. 

Coconut Puran Poli is a traditional Maharashtrian dessert recipe prepared from coconut, powdered sugar, roasted besan, and whole wheat flour. The stuffing is made with coconut, roasted besan, and sugar and does not have any lentil. Here, we used whole wheat flour instead of maida to make it more healthy. Puran Poli has many variations as per the requirement and here we prepared it in a different way to make it more and more healthy. Ingredients

  • Whole wheat flour - 1 bowl/2 cups
  • Ghee/ Clarified butter - as required
  • Saffron milk/ Kesar doodh - warm as required, with 8 to 9 strands of kesar
  • Roasted besan/ Gram flour - 1/2 cup
  • Freshly Nariyal/ Coconut - 1 cup grated
  • Elaichi powder/ Cardamom powder - 1 teaspoon or as required
  • Jaifal/ Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon, grated
  • Powdered Cheeni/ Sugar - 3 tablespoons or as required

Instructions

  1. Warm the saffron milk and keep it aside.
  2. In a bowl, add whole wheat flour, ghee, and saffron milk little by little, and make a dough.
  3. After preparing the dough, pour 1 tsp of saffron milk over it and cover it for a few minutes.
  4. In another bowl, mix properly roasted besan, freshly grated coconut, cardamom powder, saffron, nutmeg, and powdered sugar.
  5. Now, knead the dough gently, take a small portion of it, and press and flatten it slightly.
  6. Further, take ball-sized coconut mixture and place it in the centre of the flattened dough.
  7. Pull the sides, stuff in the filling securely, and start to press gently.
  8. Now, roll it gently with a rolling pin.
  9. Heat a pan and place the puran poli over it.
  10. Allow it to cook on a medium flame and flip it after a few minutes.
  11. Now, grease it with ghee and flip it again. Cook it until golden and flip it again and again until it cooks properly on both sides.
  12. Delicious 'Coconut Puran Poli' is ready to be served.
