Murmura Upma | Puffed Rice Upma is a beginner-friendly and light snack. 

Murmura Upma | Puffed Rice Upma is a simple and quick snack or breakfast dish. It is also famous by the name pori snack or Uggani or mandakki oggarane in the Southern part of India. This is a very simple dish that you can prepare just by some seasoning with mustard seeds, curry leaves and puffed rice and some spices for giving it different flavours. This breakfast recipe is a very quick recipe as it hardly takes any time and effort to prepare it. Ingredients

  • Oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Rai/ Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Hari mirch/ Green chilli - as per taste finely chopped
  • Curry patta/ Curry leaves - 8 to 10 leaves
  • Pyaaz/ Onion - 1 julienned
  • Murmura/ Puffed rice - 1 cup
  • Namak/ Salt - as per taste
  • Haldi powder/ Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • Kashmiri Laal mirch/ Red chilli powder - as per taste
  • Tamatar/ Tomato - 1 big julienned
  • Dhaniya patta/ Coriander leaves - for garnishing finely chopped
  • Nimbu ras/ Lemon juice - a dash

Instructions

  1. Rinse puffed rice under running water for 2 to 3 minutes. Wash them using a strainer to remove the excess water.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, green chilli, curry leaves, and onion to it and sauté it for a minute on medium flame.
  3. Add salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder and mix them well.
  4. Add tomato to the pan and sauté it well for a minute.
  5. Add puffed rice to the pan and mix it well with the other ingredients for a minute.
  6. Garnish it with coriander leaves. Turn off the flame and add a dash of lemon to the pan and mix it well.
  7. Murmura Upma | Puffed Rice Upma is ready to be served.
