Tamatar Pyaz Chutney is an authentic South Indian dish.

Tamatar Pyaz Chutney is a popular dish. A perfect chutney for the breakfast dishes like dosa, idli etc. It is different than the regular coconut chutney. It mainly requires simple easily available ingredients like tomato, onion and green chili. This chutney is tangy, spicy and sweet in taste. However, the tempering using the ghee, adds flavor to it. Ingredients

  • Tomato/Tamatar - 2 no
  • Onion/Pyaz - 2 no
  • Green chili/Hari mirch - 2 no
  • Oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Asafoetida powder/Hing powder - a pinch
  • Salt - to taste
  • Dry coconut - 1/2 cup grated (optional)
  • Cumin seeds/Jeera - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sugar - to taste
  • Clarified butter/Ghee - 2 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds/Rai - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder/Haldi powder - a pinch
  • Dry red chili - 2 no
  • Curry leaves - a few

Instructions

  1. Cut the tomato and onion into pieces. Heat oil in a pan. Put a pinch of asfoetida powder. Then, add the tomato and onion pieces and the green chilies.
  2. Saute well on low to medium flame for 4 to 5minutes. Allow it to cool down. Transfer the cooled mixture in the mixer jar.
  3. Then, in the mixer jar, put salt to taste, grated dry coconut, cumin seeds and sugar to taste. Grind to make a paste.
  4. For tempering, heat ghee, put a pinch of hing powder, mustard seeds. As the seeds crackle, add turmeric powder, dry red chili and curry leaves.
  5. Mix the tempering lightly with spoon and put the tempering over the chutney.
  6. The Tamatar Pyaz Chutney is ready to be served.
