Vada Pav | Mumbai Vada Pav

Vada Pav is popular and delicious street food from Mumbai. 

Vada Pav is a mouthwatering snack and most lovable of all. This is quick and easy made of potato which is known as Batata Vada served with pav – a type of bread. This has various types of chutneys in it. n Mumbai, people are eating this as breakfast, snack lunch and dinner. Everyone loves to eat this dish. You can serve it as a tea-time snack or a party snack. It is very easy to prepare and requires fewer efforts. Traditionally, the red chutney is served with this vada pav but you can make your own variations by adding different types of chutney and sauce and even cheese. This tastes amazing in all the forms. So, try to make this yummy snack at home and enjoy with your loved ones.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • Prepare the masala and then mix it with mashed potato. But make sure the potatoes are at room temperature.
  • Add salt after adding all masala and just before frying the vada.
  • Make a gram flour batter of flowing consistency and it should not be too runny or too thick.

Ingredients

  • Pav - 6
  • INGREDIENTS FOR STUFFING OF VADA:-
  • Boiled potato - 4 mashed
  • Ginger - 1/2 inch piece crushed
  • Garlic - 3 cloves crushed
  • Green chilli - 3 crushed
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Mustard seeds - 1 Teaspoon
  • Hing/Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Coriander Leaves - a handful
  • Lemon juice - 2 Teaspoon
  • Oil - 1 Tablespoon + for frying
  • INGREDIENTS FOR BATTER:-
  • Besan/Gram Flour - 1 and 1/2 Cup sieved
  • Rice flour - 1 Tablespoon
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Water - as required
  • INGREDIENTS FOR CHUTNEY:-
  • Garlic - 5 to 6 cloves
  • Red Chilli Powder - 1 Teaspoon
  • Salt - as per taste

Instructions

  1. PREPARING THE STUFFING:- Take a bowl and mash the boiled potatoes. Let it cool completely. Meanwhile, take a pan, add oil and heat it.
  2. Add mustard seeds and let it splutter. Then add curry leaves.
  3. Then add crushed ginger, garlic, green chilli. Saute it for a minute then switch off the gas. Add turmeric powder and mix well. Add this masala to the mashed potato.
  4. Add salt, coriander leaves and lemon juice. Mix well. Make small balls out of the mixture.
  5. PREPARING THE BATTER:- Take a bowl and add sieved gram flour. Add salt, turmeric powder. Mix well and all water to make batter of semi thick consistency. It should not be too thick or too thin.
  6. PREPARING THE VADA:- Heat oil for frying.
  7. Dip the potato balls in the batter. Coat it well. Then fry it in hot oil. Keep the flame high to fry the vada. Once done, take it out.
  8. Fry small bhajiya from the same batter. Fry it until crisp. Then take it out.
  9. PREPARING THE CHUTNEY:- Take a grinder jar and add small bhajiya, garlic, red chilli powder and salt. Grind it to make coarse powder. Transfer to a bowl.
  10. SERVING :- Take a pav, make a slit in it. Place the vada and then add the chutney.
  11. Delicious 'Vada Pav | Mumbai Vada Pav' is ready to be served.
