Chana Dal Vada | Dal Vada

South Indian Cuisine deals with many types of vada and one of them is Chana Dal Vada | Dal Vada.

Chana Dal Vada | Dal Vada is a quiet popular snack and breakfast option. The ground dal is mixed with onion and some spices like chilli, ginger then fried. This is crispy from outside and soft from inside. These vadas are so addictive that you will love to eat again and again. This is also known as Masala Vada or Parappu Vadai. It is quick and easy to prepare. Tea and the vada is a perfect combination one can have for evening tea-time. So, try to make this vada at home and enjoy tea time with your loved ones.

This yummy vada was prepared by Gowri Nayak – A lovely Mom from Karnataka under the live cooking contest ‘Zayka Premier League’.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • Do not add water while grinding the dal. Grind the dal coarsely.
  • The consistency of the batter should be thick. Else, it will be difficult to handle.
  • Fry the vada on low-medium heat to get perfectly cooked and crisp vada.
  • The vada tastes great with Tamarind Chutney or Coconut Chutney.

Ingredients

  • Chana Dal/Begal Gram - 1 Cup soaked for 2 to 3 hours
  • Onion - 1 finely chopped
  • Green chilli - 1 finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece grated or finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves - a handful chopped
  • Curry leaves - a spring
  • Salt - as per taste
  • Oil - for frying

Instructions

  1. Soak the chana dal/bengal gram for at least 2 to 3 hours. Then strain the dal completely.
  2. Now, take a grinder jar. Add bengal gram and grind it coarsely. Do not add water while grinding. Take out in a bowl.
  3. Add finely chopped onion, green chilli, coriander leaves, ginger, salt and curry leaves. Mix well. The consistency of the batter should be thick.
  4. Meanwhile, heat oil for frying.
  5. Once the oil is hot, make round shaped vada and fry it.
  6. Fry the vada on a low-medium flame until it turns nice golden brown in colour. It will take around 5 to 10 minutes to fry.
  7. When done, take them out on a tissue paper.
  8. Delicious 'Chana Dal Vada | Dal Vada' is ready to be served.
