Medu Vada | Traditional Medu Vada is a popular dish of South Indian.

Medu Vada | Traditional Medu Vada is a healthy protein-rich dish. This is a crispy snack made from urad dal and some spices. You can serve it with ginger chutney, sambar or coconut chutney for morning breakfast. Though, you can enjoy it for dinner or lunch as well. Tips and Suggestions by the Mom Chef:

  • The urad dal should be soaked for at least 2 hours.
  • Chana dal should be added to make a nice golden brown and crispy vada.
  • Add very less amount of water while grinding urad dal.
  • The batter of the vada should be thick consistency.

Ingredients

  • White Gram / Urad Dal - 1 Cup
  • Bengal Gram / Chana Dal - 2 tsp
  • Water - As required
  • Salt - As per taste
  • Asafoetida / Hing - 1/4 tsp
  • Green Chilli / Hari Mirchi - 2 Finely chopped
  • Ginger / Adarak - 1 Inch grated
  • Cumin Seeds / Jeera - 1 tsp
  • Oil - For frying
  • tsp = teaspoon
  • tbsp = tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Wash and soak the urad dal and chana dal separately for at least 2 hours. Then drain the water completely.
  2. Transfer it to a grinding jar. Add salt and asafoetida. Grind it for a few seconds to prepare it paste.
  3. Then take it out in a mixing bowl. Add green chilli, ginger, and cumin seeds. Mix well.
  4. Heat oil for frying. Take a small portion of batter with wet hands. Now flip the ball to make a round shape then spread it. Make a small hole in the center. Then place it in the heated oil using a thumb. Likewise, prepare all vadas.
  5. Fry them from both sides on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes. Once they turn nice golden brown, take them out on a serving plate.
  6. 'Medu Vada | Traditional Medu Vada' is ready to be served with ginger chutney and sambar.
