Rasam | Tomato Rasam is a very popular side dish. 

Rasam | Tomato Rasam is a flavourful dish and has many health benefits. This uses toor dal/pigeon peas along with tomato, tamarind, rasam powder. This is a kind of Indian soup that goes well with rice. It is beneficial for cold, cough, and also helps in the digestion. You can have it like soup as well. This is a flavourful dish for everyone. It is a common and lovable dish in every household in the Southern part of India. Everyone will love this dish. So, try to make it at home and do share your feedback with us.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • Make this dish using homemade rasam powder.
  • The consistency of rasam is a little watery as it is eaten with rice, but, if you want it thinner like soup, then add more water. So, you can adjust the consistency according to your taste.
  • This dish has a very little amount of dal/cooked pigeon peas.

Ingredients

  • Toor Dal/Pigeon Peas - 1 Tablespoon cooked
  • Tomato - 2 + 1 chopped
  • Tamarind water - as per taste
  • Jaggery - as per taste
  • Rasam Powder - 2 Teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1 Teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Asafoetida/Hing - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Curry Leaves - few
  • Coriander Leaves - a handful chopped
  • Ghee/Clarified butter - 1 Teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Cook the pigeon peas with tomato and turmeric powder. Add more water and pressure cook for 4 whistles.
  2. Heat ghee in a kadai. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, turmeric powder, and curry leaves. Let the seeds crackle.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes and cook on a medium flame. Add a little salt and cook the tomato until soft.
  4. Then add tamarind water, jaggery, and rasam powder. Let it boil.
  5. Add cooked dal along with water and add chopped coriander leaves, little salt, and mix well. Let it boil. Then, turn off the flame.
  6. Delicious 'Rasam | Tomato Rasam' is ready to be served.
