Tamatar Chutney In South Indian Style | Tomato Chutney is a simple chutney prepared from tomatoes. This chutney prepared by cooking the tomato instead of grinding it. The tempering enhances the tastes of the chutney. The tangy and spicy taste makes it more delicious. It is best to serve with warm rice or dosa or chapati. It is so easy to prepare with just tomatoes and spices. Try to prepare this amazing chutney and enjoy it with family and friends. Do share your feedback in the comment section.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • Use fresh and tender tomatoes. Wash and dry it properly before chopping.
  • For tamarind juice, soak tamarind for 10 minutes and squeeze the tamarind. Lastly, sift the water.
  • Dry roast and then grind the methi seeds to prepare the methi powder.
  • Dry roast and then grind the mustard seeds to prepare the powder.
  • Store it in an airtight container for longer shelf life.
  • Adjust the spice and tanginess as per the requirement.
  • You can even add some sweetness if you like a tangy and sweet taste.
  • Serve it hot for a better taste.

Ingredients

  • Tel/ Oil - 3 tablespoons
  • Hing/ Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Haldi powder/ Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Tamatar/ Tomato - 5 finely chopped
  • Imli/ Tamarind juice - 3 to 4 tablespoons
  • Sarso/ Mustard seeds - 2 teaspoons
  • Jeera/ Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Curry Patta/ Curry leaves - 7 to 8
  • Jeera/ Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Methi powder/ Fenugreek powder - a pinch
  • Rai powder/ Mustard powder - a pinch (optional)
  • Laal Mirch powder/ Red Chili powder - 1 teaspoon or as required
  • Namak/ Salt - as required

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and sauté hing, turmeric powder, and tomato on a low to medium flame for 10 minutes or until it starts leaving the oil.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When the seeds crackle, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, turmeric powder, and hing. Allow the seeds to splutter and then turn off the flame.
  3. Now, add cumin powder, methi powder, mustard powder, and red chilli powder to the cooked tomato.
  4. Pour the tadka on the chutney, add salt and mix it properly.
  5. Delicious 'Tamatar Chutney In South Indian Style | Tomato Chutney' is ready to be served.
