Upma In South Indian Style is a flavorful South Indian breakfast dish prepared from sooji. The ingredients used to flavor the sooji, give it a deliciously satisfying taste that will make this dish one of your new favorite go-to breakfasts.   • Roast the sooji before using it.
  • Make sure to add ghee and a dash of lemon to enhance the taste.
  • You can also add jaggery instead of sugar or even skip it.
  • Store the roasted sooji for later use.
  • Boil the water before adding it.
  • Always add sooji to the hot water in batches.
  • Make sure, to have the ratio of sooji:water as 1:2.5 proportion.
  • Add veggies of your choice.
  • Serve it hot for a better taste.

Ingredients

  • Oil - 3 tablespoons
  • Roasted peanuts - 1 cup (optional)
  • Mustard seeds - 2 teaspoons
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Hing/ asafoetida - a pinch
  • Green chili - 4 split
  • Curry leaves - 6 to 7
  • Onion - 1 finely chopped
  • Ginger - grated 1 tablespoon
  • Green capsicum - 1 small-sized finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium-sized finely chopped
  • Salt - as required
  • Fine sooji/ semolina - 1 cup or 1 small glass
  • Water - 3 (1/2) glass or as required
  • Sugar - 1/2 tablespoon (optional)
  • Carrot - 1 grated
  • Coriander leaves - a fistful finely chopped
  • Ghee/ clarified butter - 2 tablespoons
  • Lemon juice - 2 teaspoons

Instructions

  1. Roast sooji by adding 1 tablespoon of oil and turmeric powder. Keep the flame low and roast it for 3 to 4 minutes. Then, turn off the flame and allow it to cool.
  2. Boil water and keep it aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan and add peanuts, mustard seeds, turmeric powder, hing, green chili, curry leaves, onion, and ginger. Saute it well.
  4. Add capsicum, tomato, salt, and saute it.
  5. Pour boiled water in it and mix it properly.
  6. Add sugar, carrot, and mix it.
  7. Add roasted sooji little by little and stir it continuously to avoid lumps.
  8. Now, add ghee, mix it, and turn off the flame. Cover and rest it for 2 minutes.
  9. Lastly, add a dash of lemon.
  10. Delicious Upma In South Indian Style is ready to be served.
