Moong Dal Payasam is a popular South Indian style kheer.

Moong Dal Payasam is a simple and easy kheer recipe prepared from moong dal, jaggery, and milk. It is a traditional dessert prepared during festivals. It is easy and quick to prepare, as moong dal hardly takes any time to cook when compared to other lentils. This payasam is sweet, creamy, and absolutely delicious. The flavor of cardamom powder and kapur enhance it’s taste. Adding a paste of dry fruits gives it a wonderful texture. Moreover, it enhances the nutritive value of this delicious dessert considerably.

Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-

  • Sieve the jaggery syrup to remove it’s impurities.
  • You can also use coconut milk instead of regular milk.
  • Add cashew or almond paste to thick the consistency.
  • Adjust the sweetness as per the requirement.
  • Always use ghee for tempering.
  • Make sure to add jaggery syrup after it cools down.

Ingredients

  • Moong dal/ Yellow husked and split gram - 1 cup
  • Water - as required
  • Doodh/ Milk - 1 litre
  • Gur/ Jaggery - 1 cup
  • Badam or Kaju/ Almonds or cashew - soaked for 30 minutes and ground
  • Ghee/ Clarified butter - 3 teaspoons
  • Kismis/ Raisins - 2 teaspoons
  • Elaichi powder/ Cardamom powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Camphor/ Khane wala kapur - a pinch

Instructions

  1. Wash the moong dal properly, transfer it to a pressure cooker and add enough water. Boil for two whistles and then mix it properly.
  2. Add milk in batches and mix it. Allow it to boil.
  3. Meanwhile, heat a pan and add jaggery and some water. Mix it properly and boil it for two to three minutes. Allow it to cool down.
  4. Add almond or cashew paste in the cooker and mix it.
  5. Now, heat ghee in a pan and add raisins.
  6. Then, strain the jaggery syrup into the cooker and mix it.
  7. Add the ghee tadka and mix it properly.
  8. Add cardamom powder and kapur. Mix it well and allow it to cook for a minute and turn off the flame.
  9. Delicious 'Moong Dal Payasam' is ready to be served.
